At Nadi Marketing, we specialize in creating purpose-led events that not only achieve key metrics but also cultivate lasting community connections. When The Reuse & Repair Collective, a Zero Waste San Diego project prepared for its grand opening in Downtown San Diego, they needed a partner to ensure a seamless, low-waste celebration that would establish the Collective as a vibrant community hub.
The Reuse & Repair Collective, backed by Zero Waste San Diego’s 18 years of community impact, is a unique Downtown San Diego resource. Located in a converted school building, it offers residents access to a fully-stocked tool shed, sewing room, and bike repair station, and more! This model allows members and visitors to access tools, learn repair skills from skilled volunteers using the “do-it-together” method, and extend the life of their belongings, a mission that perfectly aligns with our values of community and sustainability. This case study highlights how we oversaw all sponsorship and high-level coordination efforts to deliver a high-impact, low-waste grand opening event that generated significant connections, media coverage, and set the stage for long-term organizational success.
The Service
For this project, Nadi Marketing provided complete sponsorship management and focused event coordination for The Collective’s grand opening. Our focus was on securing essential in-kind food and drink sponsorships and coordinating a low-waste event model that reflected the client’s mission. Our comprehensive service included:

- Keynote Support & Ceremony Management: Providing an overview and structure for two speaker speeches and coordinating the opening ceremony to ensure a polished and impactful moment for the launch.
- Event Logistics: Coordinating all event elements to ensure a seamless guest experience, including setup and teardown, while implementing a zero-waste protocol.
- Stakeholder Coordination: Acting as the primary liaison with The City Center Business District (Downtown BID) and other key community partners.
Note: The Collective’s internal team oversaw the event volunteers, the grand opening activity, and the email invitations to their member list, allowing Nadi Marketing to focus on high-impact external coordination and event structure.
Goals
- Host a High-Attendance Grand Opening: Successfully launch The Reuse & Repair Collective with a well-attended event that showcases the space’s unique amenities (Tool Shed, Sewing Room, Bike Repair Station).
- Ensure a Zero-Waste Event Model: Execute the grand opening with minimal environmental impact, demonstrating a commitment to the Collective’s core Zero Waste San Diego mission.
- Generate High-Value Media Visibility: Secure earned media coverage to build initial awareness and credibility within the San Diego community.
- Cultivate Future Partnerships: Identify and initiate relationships with key sponsor leads and community partners for the Collective’s long-term sustainability.
Strategy
Our strategy focused on three key areas: Authentic Sponsorship, Strategic Community Anchoring, and High-Impact Communications.
- Mission-Aligned Sponsorship: We leveraged the Collective’s strong mission, to reduce consumption by enabling repair and upcycling, to attract in-kind food and drink sponsors who were enthusiastic about supporting a zero-waste initiative. This approach secured high-quality donations while minimizing event costs and upholding the low-waste commitment.
- Strategic Community Anchoring: We formalized a key partnership with The City Center Business District (Downtown BID). This collaboration was crucial for introducing the Collective as an essential Downtown resource, particularly for urban residents needing access to tools and workshop space.
- Proactive Media Outreach: We developed a compelling narrative around the repair economy and the value of a permanent, community-focused repair space, targeting local news outlets interested in sustainability, business innovation, and hands-on community development to maximize earned media.
