The month-long challenge is a global movement encouraging millions of people to reduce their plastic waste and be part of the solution. Last year, Plastic Free July estimated “250 million people across the globe took part in the challenge from 177 countries.” To further our impact, this year we are encouraging businesses to take part in the challenge. There are many ways brands can participate, and we’ve listed five ways to start the discussion.
Share the Challenge with your Employees and Customers
An easy way to participate in Plastic Free July is by sharing the challenge and encouraging others to participate. Businesses can influence employees, vendors, partners, and customers just by spreading awareness. Furthermore, companies can provide incentives for employees and customers who participate, such as E-gift cards or reusable products.
Post on Social Media
Use your digital platforms to encourage others to participate in Plastic Free July. We have compiled a list of ways to promote the challenge and remember to tag @plasticfreejuly and use the hashtags #PlasticFreeJuly #ChooseToRefuse to reach more people. Also, tag us at @Nadi_Marketing, and we will repost your content.

Focus On One Plastic Item
As a business, you can choose to focus on one plastic item to reduce during July, either on the back-end or front-end. For example, as states are reopening, restaurants can create a Plastic Free July campaign to consume fewer takeout utensils with a combination of social media posts and posters at the restaurant. The creative can ask customers plastic-free questions like, “Do you have silverware at home you can use?” or “Do you need plastic takeout utensils if you are planning to eat at home? Consider not using plastic utensils to help us with our Plastic Free July efforts.”
Host an Event
Go beyond the challenge and host an event. Businesses can host a beach or neighborhood cleanup in July. In addition, for brands that sell eco-friendly reusable products, you can encourage people to get ready for the challenge by purchasing your products. This event can be virtual or in-person if your state is allowing you to reopen your storefront for curbside pickups or walk-in purchases. Take advantage of Facebook and Instagram Live to show your eco-friendly products and ways to support the challenge. The Plastic Free July website also allows you to post your event using its submission form.
Partner with Plastic Free Foundation
Lastly, if you would like to provide financial support to the organization that is hosting this challenge, you can become a business partner. There are different ways to participate as a business partner, such as corporate partnership, challenge sponsor, and local business supporter. There are more ways to partner with the Plastic Free Foundation, and interested companies can find more information by visiting their website.
As we are getting closer to Plastic Free July, please share how your business will be participating this year. We want more businesses to participate in Plastic Free July each year to multiply the awareness and impact. If you need any support, contact us at hello@nadimarketing.com, and we are happy to help.
